Taking Care of Your Jewelry.

Welcome to SushiMama!
My name is Dawne, and I make fine beaded jewelry, as well as dabble in paper arts and other delightful things. Each of my creations is unique and distinctive. I offer many pieces of my jewelry for sale, which you can find in my Boutique. I also showcase some select work from my personal collection, as well as offer tutorials on beadwork and paper arts.
I hope you enjoy my art!

What's New

I have one new piece, Rosalie. Rosalie is a wirework necklace featuring two lampwork beads made by Mari Johnson as well as a variety of Czech fire-polished beads. The wirework components that form this necklace were all handcrafted, and give it an airy, delicate feel.

Don't forget to visit my online journal (whatifimamermaid.wordpress.com, or click on the mermaid below) and you can read about some new projects, some old ongoing projects, and my many miscellaneous thoughts.

What if I'm a Mermaid?

The Limelight

In the Limelight we have Lala, a pair of beadwork earrings. I made these earrings to resemble stylized flowers, and they feature freshwater pearl dangles. They are definitely eye-catching, yet the pretty pinks and purples of the beads ensure a feminine look.

On My Love of Beads and Jewelry

With my beads I create beautiful, distinctive jewelry. I love working with beads – their beauty, texture, and history inspire me and make it exciting to sew them together, one by one, to create jewelry that is unique and meaningful. Most of my beadwork is done in a free-flowing manner, with no patterns and sometimes only a vague idea in my head. I enjoy letting the beadwork happen, without too much advance planning. When creating my jewelry I don't follow the latest fashions or trends; I prefer to follow my own muse, giving my beadwork a life and presence of its own.

I have two styles that I like to follow for my beadwork. One is an earthy, organic look, like something you would find under some damp leaves in the forest or washed up on the beach. The other is an elegant, vintage look, remeniscent of something a free-spirited, artistic lady of yore would wear to express herself while still keeping with the style of the times.

I do not look at jewelry as mere accessory or ornamentation. I believe there is a deeper connection between the wearer and the jewelry. I feel that each piece I make has an inner spark and acquires memories, thoughts, and history throughout its life. A beautiful piece of jewelry has the power to make the wearer also feel beautiful, inside and out.

On My Love of Making Things

Through my website I hope to share not only my love of beads but also my love for making things in general. I love working with my hands and it is so satisfying to create something beautiful. I think for women especially there is a strong urge to create. Whether through arts and crafts or cooking delicious food or making beautiful things for the home - women have an innate need to express themselves.

I have loved making things since I was a little girl. I find that creating and making things is a necessary and important part of life, and I want to share my love and passion for making things and hopefully encourage and maybe even inspire others to express themselves creatively.
